Bye Bye Social Media (for now)

Id.3 is coming on 20 years of its inception. A lot has changed in my nearly 30 year career of designing in Tahoe, where I have gone from being the youngest designer to being one of the older designers. On construction sites I’ve gone from cat calls and eye rolls to becoming part of the trusted teams where the atmosphere is a bit more welcoming for women.
Once only hand drafting, providing sketches and subscribing to every interior magazine to stay connected and current to the design world while living in Tahoe, we now create live changes with clients, photo realistically render concepts and have switched process and programs to use Revit, further streamlining our process.

Once pouring over magazines, I personally went to endless scrolls of inspiration on social media. Ah social media. Once an exciting tool for ideas and connection, it has become an endless drone of self promotion and “pick me” content that has become soulless and addictive at the same time. I began spending too much time creating content and scrolling content, rather than living content. Once letting my mind meander to create new and unique design concepts, I became trapped in the endless cycle of scrolling for inspiration. My creative process became, well, less creative.
In an attempt to slow down time and create methodically and with intention I have stepped id.3 away from social media, and after a 2 month sabbatical I do not plan to reenter it anytime soon, which likely ages me, but I have lived with and without social media, and I choose the latter.
Like social media, my stepping away from it is too a social experiment, and could prove detrimental as Tahoe is a treasure trove of highly skilled and talented designers. But, I don’t feel the need to prove that Id.3 is more worthy of a job than others in the area. Most, to all, Tahoe Truckee firms are women owned and operated, and as a female business owner in the world of home building, I want all of the others like me to win. After 20 years of running id.3 I know the right clients and projects will always find us.
Although we are not posting a scheduled onslaught of curated photos and catchy hashtags, we are busy working behind the scenes, living, creating, being, everything design. With 20 years of work, commitment and creativity and 100’s of projects under our belt, Id.3’s work stands on its own. Word of mouth has really been the key to our success,; we show up, we have integrity and we simply just do good work.
Catch ya out there in the real world.
XOXO Shannon
